Fugitive dust is caused by small particles created from material impact (transferring, crushing, breaking) and wind erosion. Particles less than 200 microns become airborne from air displacement in the transfer systems or wind. Dust particles less than 10 microns are respirable and create a health hazard.

Handling of a material creates opportunities for the dust particles to become airborne and become a fugitive emission. This creates health, housekeeping and safety issues. The percent moisture of the material and the amount of fines present, impact dust levels. Typically, at moisture levels above 10% dust will not be a problem. At moisture levels below 4%, dust could be significant depending on particle size and the material handled.

Many materials do not want to be wetted by water alone due to the material and water having the same electrical charge, and repelling each other (much like trying to put two magnets together), and the difference in size between the dust particle and the water droplet. This issue can be overcome by "drenching" the material, but this can have a negative impact in the handling system (chutes plugging, belt tracking, freezing problems).

The cokemaking industry has seen the classification of a number of tar-based coke plant wastes as being either toxic, hazardous or requiring special handling. Environmental regulatory agencies have placed increasingly stringent restrictions on the handling, storage and disposal of these waste products. Currently, tar- decanter sludge (TDS) is classified as a "listed" hazardous waste that must be recycled within the coke plant in an approved manner, or transported to an approved secure landfill. Other tar sludges are often considered troublesome for disposal because they require special handling.

The AKJ process is a patented process that is used to convert TDS and other tar wastes into a pumpable fuel that has multiple alternative uses within an integrated steel plant. Other waste materials, i.e., tar tank deposits, tank car deposits, terminal treatment sludge and coke plant waste pond material, have been successfully processed into beneficial liquid fuels.

AKJ Industries currently has six operating plants within the United States, with more scheduled for construction in the near future.

Fugitive dust emissions at coal fired power generating stations have become a major environmental compliance issue. Fugitive dust is caused by small particles created from material (coal) impact (transferring, crushing, breaking) and wind erosion. Particles less than 200 microns become airborne from air displacement in the transfer systems or wind. Dust particles less than 10 microns are respirable and create a health hazard.

Handling of a coal creates opportunities for the dust particles to become airborne and become a fugitive emission. Besides being a health hazard, this dust creates housekeeping and safety issues. Typically, at higher moisture levels of the coal, dust will not be a problem. At moisture levels below 4%, fugitive dust will be significant.

Dust challenges vary depending upon the material being transferred. As an example, western coal is more friable than eastern coal and has less surface moisture. As such, western coal is dustier than eastern coal.

Many materials (especially coal) do not want to be wetted by water alone. This is due to the material and water having the same electrical charge, and repelling each other (much like trying to put two magnets together), and the difference in size between the dust particle and the water droplet. This can be overcome by "drenching" the material, but this can have a negative impact in the handling system (chutes plugging, belt tracking, freezing problems), and create costly BTU penalties in burning the water off of the treated material. AKJ Industries, Inc. has the solutions.

The increased railway transportation of coal has resulted in more issues of coal dust blowing from the mounded-up, moving hopper cars along transportation routes than ever before. This dust presents problems for the rail lines and communities along the way as it effects the environmental and deposits in the burden along the route. In many areas, the effect on the burden has been so severe that it required closing the line to clean it up!

Over the last two years, AKJ Industries developed a line of new products to help control the dust. We worked with the rail companies and their trade organizations to make sure we would meet the demands of the marketplace to solve their problems. In that effort, we had our new line independently tested by Simpson Weather Associates to provide proof that our enhanced products would meet the need. Simpson had been selected by the railway trade association to do the testing for all products that were proposed to minimize the railway dust problems. And, their tests proved that AKJ's new line would do the job! See excerpt from their report directly below:

Note especially the line that reads, "No dust was produced when the chemically treated sample was place on a slope in a wind tunnel & exposed to air flow perturbations."

Don't wait until a regulatory body forces a solution on you; contact us today to solve the dust issues with your coal transportation!

The AKJ line of railcar top binders is ready to go when you are! Our engineers are ready and willing to work with you on application feed equipment to insure complete coverage at the absolute minimum total cost to your company.

Where there is sludge, there is an option.

To AKJ, recycle means return, not just in terms of raw material, but in terms of bottom line impact. While most environmental companies specialize in removal, AKJ specializes in recovery. Depending upon material origination, AKJ has an innovative solution to recapture valuable hydrocarbons for product recovery. Processed material is suitable for re-introduction into cat crackers, to slop oil tanks, to the crude supply, to the coker, to the solvent de-asphalter, to other process streams, or as a high BTU quality alternative fuel for boiler or cement kiln consumption.

AKJ has developed its CPR 2000T specifically for petroleum tank sludges. A unique patented process that involves a series of specially designed pumps and mills which fluidize sludges for solid size reduction that was previously unattainable in the industry. This allows 100% recovery of all material. AKJ utilizes this with conventional technology to deliver the most cost effective solution. Other options include centrifuging, screening, and/or heating. The CPR 2000T incorporates all these solutions in a mobile unit.

Vertical Integration of Services- AKJ closes the loop. AKJ's comprehensive approach to providing you a solution starts with the product removal. Full trained and qualified personnel handle the job from the cleaning, removal, and inspection of the tank until the recycled product reaches its intended end use.
